The Yahoo data breach is in the news again!
Did you live in the United States or Israel and had an email account through Yahoo or related websites such as Yahoo Sports, Yahoo Finance, Tumblr, and Flickr between 2012 and 2016? If so, you may be eligible for compensation resulting from the settlement in a class-action lawsuit.
This settlement is the result of a massive data breach that happened between 2013 and 2016. During that time, millions of email addresses and other personal data were stolen. Although the settlement won’t be finalized until April 2020, Yahoo is informing users of their options now. If you’re a Class Member in this lawsuit, you received an email from Yahoo this week with the subject line, “Yahoo Security Breach Proposed Settlement.”
Qualifying Class Members can choose to receive two years of identity theft and fraud protection from a credit monitoring service called All Clear, or they can opt for a small share of the $177.5 million settlement.
To claim the monetary payout, U.S. residents must verify that they will have credit monitoring or ID protection services in place for at least one year. The cash option is estimated to pay between $100 and $358 per claimant, depending upon how many people file a claim.
If you’re a member of this class and would like to submit a claim, visit Yahoo’s settlement page and click “File Claim” on the right-hand side of the screen. To file a claim by mail, download a hard copy of the claim form from the settlement’s documents page and mail it to the following address:
Yahoo! Inc. Customer Data Breach Security Litigation
c/o Settlement Administrator
PO Box 1760
Philadelphia PA 19105-1760
To get the cash settlement or receive the credit monitoring, you must file a claim before July 20, 2020. If you want to retain your right to sue Yahoo, you must opt out of the settlement class by March 6, 2020.
For more information, visit the settlement website or contact the Settlement Administrator by calling 844-702-2788 or emailing info@YahooDataBreachSettlement.com.
