I actually had never heard of this movie before, but my kids loved Ponyo and this seemed like a similar type movie. Disney Presents Studio Ghibli My Neighbor Totoro originally was released back in 2010 and actually has both Elle and Dakota Fanning as Satsuki and Mai (sisters) in the movie.
The basic premise of the movie is while their mother is away in the hospital, Satsuki, Mai and their father move into an old house out in the country. Mai travels the land playing and finds Totoro, a HUGE magical creature/spirit that can only be seen by the kids.
My kids both have asked to see this film several times since it arrived for review. Like most Disney movies I actually enjoyed it too. The relationship between Mai and Satsuki while their mom is in the hospital. I loved seeing how Satsuki cares for her little sister and would do anything for her. Totoro also helps the girls and becomes a friend.
He protects the girls while their father is away. The kids really liked the magical creature, Totoro added that “mystery” and appeal to the young kids.
The BluRay adaption was crystal clear too! The anime style movies tend to be a bit blurry compared to others but this one was quite crisp. Plus… the BluRay has special features to check out too!

Definitely recommend checking this one out if you haven’t seen it! I’m sure your kids will love it just as much as mine did!
