Wow, summer went by so fast! The Kiddie-Pool Gardens are looking a little scraggly here and there, but I am still getting plenty of hot peppers and herbs. Most of the remaining tomatoes are healthy looking but green. Maybe some fried green tomatoes? The ones we harvested were so good; I just wish there had been more. The best crop of tomatoes over the past 5 years was in those hanging planters, but they are challenging to set up. I will probably try this method next year with a different type of tomato.
My attempt to grow green onions and garlic may still result in something, time will tell as we head into fall. I have read that you are suppose to plant garlic in October. I did mine in May, so who knows what will happen. The one below is my best chance, but I am waiting to harvest when the leaves get browner.
I really want to master this green onion idea so I can have them year-round inside. And, I am enjoying the herbs so much, dried or fresh, that I am investigating setting up a little garden inside over the winter months. Maybe the green onions and herbs will work together. The plants outside are just not looking like those I buy at the store. Wish I could see the underground part. Anyone out there who knows this subject better than I do, feel free to jump in with advice.
As you might have noticed in the collage, the herbs have been a successful event. Even though I had read that you should hang them to dry out, I just let mine sit for a week in a dry place. Then I removed the leaves.
I have a little chopper that works well to chop them down. I have had it for a long time, but Amazon sells similar ones.
After they are chopped, just transfer them into a zip lock bag, or use a more decorative approach like I did. I had these nice glass containers that are part of an set. You can find them on Amazon as well. I am still harvesting a lot of basil, too much to use up myself.
No matter what, it has been an adventure. I would love to hear about your harvests if you had a garden this year. I need all the inspiration and suggestions I can get.
