It really is just that. I laughed and cried through this movie. Very touching and it really is “People like us”.
Somewhere I was reading an interview with Elizabeth Banks where they were talking about how there really are just straightforward “dramas” anymore. It is usually a Romantic movie, a Comedy, Action, Adventure or a mix of it all. This definitely has comedy in it but just as much comedy as everyday life.
I think many of us in this day and age have half brothers or sisters, some of which you may or may not be close to. I do! Thankfully over the past several years we have become closer but I know that isn’t always the case.
You start out with Sam — who is a salesman and a shady one at that. You get to watch him grow as a person through this film. I think everyone knows the basic story line, his dad dies and all within a day or two he finds out his estranged father has passed and he has a half sister who he never knew existed.
Frankie — Sam’s half sister — is this sharp witted, single mom and you pretty much fall in love with her character right away. (Or maybe that is just Elizabeth Banks? I love her in everything!)
There are ups and downs, lies and secrets all of which come unraveling around them by the end of the movie. You come full circle to find out who their dad really was as a person, while getting to know both and watching them become adults.
I LOVED every minute of it. I will going to see it again for sure and I hope you do too!!
Coming soon… an exclusive interview with the director Alex Kurtzmann!
