Whirlpool is recalling cooktops with a glass cooking surface and touch controls sold under the Whirlpool, KitchenAid and JennAir brands as the recalled cooktop surface elements can turn on by themselves, posing burn and fire hazards.
The affected cooktops were manufactured between December 2016 and July 2019 and a complete list of the model numbers recalled can be found on the US Consumer Product Safety Commission’s website.
Whirlpool has received 133 reports of cooktop surface elements turning on by themselves. This resulted in 14 reports of heat damage to nearby items and four reports of items catching on fire, including one report of significant property damage. Two minor burn injuries have also been reported.
If you find that your glass cooktop has been affected by this recall, contact Whirlpool immediately to arrange for a free installation of a replacement cooktop. In the meantime, turn the unit off at the circuit breaker when not in use and do not leave flammable materials or empty cookware on or near the cooktop.
