I am really working on NOT being judgmental about people, with worldwide media at the touch of our finger tips, it is so easy to judge every little thing before you know all the details. But I just read this article over on Babble that has my blood boiling.
This lady, Shanesha Taylor, lives in Pheonix, AZ. She is unemployed, poverty stricken and overall the situation seems pretty dire. My heart goes out to her for the circumstances that she WAS in. Until she went and put the lives of two small children at risk.
She had a job interview and unfortunately her child care fell through. Instead of either rescheduling or finding SOMEONE to watch her children she made the choice to leave a 6 month old and a 2 year old in the car alone, in Phoenix. In what is stated to be 100 degree temperatures. 100 Degree temperatures. In the car. Trapped.
Both children were crying, uncomfortable and LEFT ALONE. With the keys in the ignition too. That was her choice. She is now pleading not guilty to child abuse. I understand that she NEEDS a job. She has to support her family. But NEVER, EVER is leaving your children in a car in the heat (or any other time) the solution.
Period. There is no… only if… You just don’t do that.
So now someone decided to start up a YouCaring.com site for donations for this lady (no, I am not linking to it). Rewind a few weeks, this would be of no concern and would be warranted for the welfare of those poor kids. But that choice was WRONG. By sending her $100,000 are we not, as a society saying that what she did was okay?
I don’t understand it. I have been in hard times myself in the past. I have had a home foreclosed on. I have had a car re-possessed. Things have looked pretty bleak. But I worked my butt off — at home, with my kids there too and turned it around.
Am I being unreasonable to think that she SHOULD be punished for her actions?

She should not get that money. It should go to child abuse prevention programs. However, if she ends up going to jail (at least in my state) they will apply for state funding to help pay for her stay. In order to qualify, she would only be allowed to have a small amount of assets. If she has more – like that $100,000 – the state will take that to pay for her care before the public aid kicks in. So most likely, she won’t get to keep it for herself. Thank goodness for that.
