3 weeks down! Oliver is 3 weeks as of 11:44 this morning. I told you in the last update that he had been moved onto the Hudson prongs (cpap) oxygen. He did not do well on this unfortunately. He was on it for about 36 hours and kept having to be bumped way up on the oxygen percentage and was having a lot of bradies (heart rate drops).
So yesterday morning they had to move him back off the prongs and reintubate. 🙁 This is apparently very normal for babies his size but it was not a good day for mom because I HATE seeing him poked and prodded and yesterday was a day full of that. Monday, the day he did have the prongs in, my kangaroo care with him was cut short as he kept having bradies while I was holding him. He was just not tolerating it well at all. You can see him during that care here <3
Tuesday morning, I decided I would treat myself to a Starbucks after dropping the older kids off at school. As I was sitting in the drive thru that dreaded phone number popped up on my cell phone. The hospital. Here’s the thing with the NICU, they don’t call you unless there is something bad happening. I call them regularly to check in when I am not there. But they really do not call unless there is something they need my ok for, or a set back of some kind or another. So seeing that phone number pop up on my cell phone immediately takes my breath away.
The nurse was calling to let me know that his oxygen had been bumped all the way up to 90% on the prongs (way too high) so they were now reintubating him. But he was fighting them tooth and nail so he was given some sedation, and was still fighting them. He is a feisty little bugger that is for sure. He was also anemic again (which was most likely due to all the blood draws) so would need another blood transfusion = more poking, as he would need a new IV.
I KNOW that these procedures are necessary, and helping him get the best care possible. But as a mom, it kills me. Seeing this tiny little baby go through so much is hell.
They did get the intubation done and the transfusion. He immediately started doing better. So that is good. He was quite sedated all day but you could see that he was more comfortable.
Sleeping this morning…. I love the way he sprawls out if you let him.
Good news is, today was his last day on antibiotics. That means that they will most likely take the picc line out tomorrow! Of course the Doctors are already talking about when to extubate again, I am hoping they wait at least a couple days. We do need to get him off the tube but I don’t want to end up going back and forth so much.
This afternoon when I went in, I timed it just in time for his cares so was able to do his diaper change, take his temp and then do an hour of kangaroo care. He was wide awake for it, looking around and just a little sweetie. I read to him for a bit, sang to him and just cuddled. He was working hard to lift his head up and look around too.
He had NO bradies today which was also great news. AND he is now 2.4lbs. Gaining again 🙂
Thank you again for keeping Oliver in your thoughts and prayers.
