Prior to my trip to LA a couple weeks ago, I really hadn’t heard of Ty Simpkins. But he is sure to be a household name now! Ty Simpkins plays “Harley” in Iron Man 3. A young boy that Tony Stark encounters in the back woods of Tennessee and they become friends.
The chemistry between them was fantastic and it really added a great aspect to the movie (see my review here).
During my trip, we were given the opportunity to do an exclusive interview with Ty, I was quite impressed with how grounded he is. I can see how acting in such a large movie, working with Robert Downey Jr (!!!!) and all the glitz and glam could easily change a person, but Ty showed up to the interview with his Mom and was just like any other sweet 11 year old boy.
Here is a glimpse into the view of Ty:
What’s your favorite aspect of your character?
I think my favorite aspect of being my character is that I get to meet Tony Stark. But I’m similar to him. Because I’m a– like a genius in the movie. And he’s a genius in the movie, of course, more of a genius than my character.
Do you have a favorite hero?
Iron Man. I mean it– it’s been my dream.
How does it feel to be working with Robert?
Oh, it’s awesome. Like literally Robert Downey Jr. is my favorite person.
How did you get into acting?
So I’ve been acting since I was born. I was still in my mom’s stomach when the people called and asked me to be on this– I think it was like at– it was either a TV show or a soap opera. I’m not sure. But they asked me. And then– uh, they didn’t ask me. They asked my mom. And she said I’m not born yet. But and then they said we’ll wait.
What was your biggest challenge during filming?
One line kept getting like annoying. And I had to say retro-reflection panels. [LAUGHTER] And it was really hard. And then once the day was over I knew how to say it. That happens a lot.
What are some favorite non-acting activities?
I like to play baseball. I like to fence. Yeah. And I like to make Lego stop motion videos.
If you haven’t seen Iron Man 3 yet — GO SEE IT!! It is in theaters now and a fantastic movie!
