Growing up I remember those nights where I just couldn’t sleep because of a cough. It sucked! I think we all know from experience that a cough is just worse at night. You lay down and it seems the coughing just doesn’t stop! It sucks.
One thing that always helped… Vicks VapoRub. It’s a topical cough medicine with medicated vapors. And just a little bit goes a LONG way to keep things cleared up. A few years back, my daughter had an awful cough. We would put it the Vicks VapoRub on her chest and off to sleep she would go. The cough would pretty much disappear and let her sleep. My grandma actually recommended putting a little on the bottom of her feet, then putting socks on, it works! No joke! (Note: While this is a trick that definitely seems to work well, Vicks promotes it for throat/chest application.)
There is NO delay, Vicks VapoRub starts working instantly and can help all night long. Or, if you need it during the day it works great then too, no drowsiness or other side effects. Do keep in mind that it is intended for anyone 2+, but the good thing is that you can use it on the kids!
Ingredients wise, as it has eucalyptus oil in it, not only does it help with a cough but it can be used for sore muscles or aches too. The cooling effect helps relieve it. And a little goes a LONG way. No need to over do it. Just get a dab on your finger, and rub on your chest (or the kiddo’s!). Sore muscles? Rub it there too!
I think one of the only good memories I have of being sick was when I was being pampered, chicken noodle soup, hot lemon tea, lots of sleep and Vicks VapoRub. That minty smell, finally getting relief! This was one of those things that we ALWAYS had to have in the house growing up. There really was no generic or other brand that helps you breathe quite as well!
New parents, if you don’t already know, this is one of the best night time remedies to help your kiddos sleep when they have a cough. Be sure to have it on hand!
