Here is one my mom wrote. Unfortunately, I was not around to meet Copper.
Copper Created This Bond
My very own first cat was a Manx cat with a very short, bobbed tail. I had to convince my parents to let me take him home from my aunt and uncle’s house. He was orange, and I named him Copper. Copper spent a good portion of his time outside, but he would usually come in at night when I called for him, and he would sleep on my bed.
Each morning I would look out of my bedroom window to see Copper on the neighbor’s porch eating homemade pancakes that the elderly woman, Mrs. V, broke up into little pieces. No need to add syrup or butter…Copper loved them plain. I was the one who fed him cat food. Mrs. V gave him the treats. It was marginal who Copper really belonged to; he spent as much time next door as he did at my house.
This dual ownership worked well, and I can remember sharing stories about “our” favorite cat. I understood why Copper lover her pancakes since I did too. Mrs. V was not a really friendly person, but Copper brought out the very best in her.
Before we had the chance to have Copper neutered…back then it was not as common…one day he came home terribly beat up from a cat fight. It was so bad my parents told me it would be too expensive to fix him. They even asked Mrs V what she thought. She declined any help and Copper left both of us forever. Later that same day, she felt so bad she changed her mind, but it was too late. As sad as our loss was, both of us knew that Copper had created a bond that we would never forget.
